Where to Go for Cocktails San Francisco: Privateer at the Pier

Pier 23 Cafe Billboard Best Cocktails

“One day if I do go to heaven…I’ll look around and say, ‘It ain’t bad, but it ain’t San Francisco’.” ― Herb Caen

We agree. San Francisco has all things heavenly. The Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Twin Peaks, Union Square… plus some of the most diverse and delicious restaurants we’ve seen. New hot spots pop up all over town all the time.

But one of the best spots in the City is an institution that’s been around for over 30 years. If you’re looking for delicious food and some of the best cocktails in San Francisco (with a waterfront locale), hop on the world-famous cable car towards the Embarcadero. Jump off at Pier 23 Cafe.

Crab in Butter and Garlic

Because the Food

Locals have been frequenting this must-visit establishment for years and it’s easy to see why. Pier 23 Cafe’s  menu boasts house specialties ranging from traditional fish and chips with a non-traditional pineapple slaw, to tuna poke drenched in an orange-ginger marinade and roasted crab in garlic, sake, and butter. (Our mouths water at the thought of dipping some of that famous sourdough bread in the melted butter that dresses the crab.)

Don’t fret if you don’t have time to sit for a full meal. Pier 23 Cafe’s line-up of starters perfectly compliments a Sunday Funday of bar-hopping in search of the best cocktails on San Francisco Bay. Get messy with some peel and eat shrimp or go light with a Kale Caesar salad. Their recently remodeled space will make you wish you could stay all day.

And of Course, the Drink

All this talk about food is making us thirsty. In addition to a great local beer list that includes Anchor Steam and Lagunitas, they have concocted some brilliant craft cocktails to whet your whistle. From the “Specialty Cocktail” list, order the Privateer. This colorful and flavorful drink starts with Azuñia organic tequila and La Pinta Pomegranate tequila and ends with fresh squeezed lime and a salt-rimmed glass.

Mr. Caen must have had one of these tasty concoctions before uttering those famous words about San Francisco being heaven.

And all that Jazz

If the food and drink (and location) aren’t quite enough to entice you, how about some live music to quench that jones for culture? Pier 23 Cafe has that too. Check out Pier 23 Cafe’s music calendar to see which one of their upcoming nightly shows fit in your schedule.

If you don’t want to take our word for how on point this place is, take Guy Fieri’s. Pier 23 Cafe was featured in his “Funky and Fresh” episode of “Guy’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives”. The episode originally aired back in 2010, but the restaurant continues to live up to Guy’s hype today.
