Tequila is a staple liquor at every bar because it is just so #basic. It is a full-flavored rich spirit that not only tastes amazing neat or on the rocks, but is also delicious in a wide range of craft tequila cocktail recipes. Hidden behind tequila’s basicness lies a certain magic that deserves celebration. Here are some of our favorite unusual musings about this anything-but-basic spirit.
Lightning Never Strikes the Same Place Twice. But it Does Strike (Liquid) Gold.
During a storm in Jalisco, Mexico, a lightning bolt zapped an agave plant, scorching it and cooking the plant. The Aztecs saw the golden juice leaking from the center of the agave and were curious enough to taste it. It was that moment when they realized that tequila was delicious, and concluded that it must be a gift from the Gods. Of course, this is just folklore behind the discovery of tequila, but most would agree that it is definitely a gift from above.
A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down.
Who needs sugar when you have tequila? In 1918, during the worldwide flu epidemic killing millions of people, doctors in Mexico prescribed tequila with salt and limes to their patients in an effort to “cure” the flu. While there is no scientific evidence that tequila will cure the flu, one may be able to argue that it will, at least temporarily, alleviate the symptoms. Is there a doctor in the house?
Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.
We know that diamonds are mined or made from carbon. But did you know that the National Autonomous University of Mexico figured out a way to make small synthetic diamonds out of tequila? We don’t think these tequila-made diamonds will grace many ring fingers anytime soon, but they are used in certain electronics. So in time, who knows? Your boyfriend might propose with a 2-carat shot of Azuñia Blanco organic tequila. (Don’t believe us, just watch.)
Worried About the High Cost of Gasoline?
Batteries, solar, natural gas, and hydrogen power. These are real substitutes to fuel that once seemed like something out of the Jetsons. Can you imagine adding tequila-powered to the list of ‘alternative fuel vehicles’? It could happen. Chrysler created a turbine car, and when the President of Mexico heard about it, he had a brilliant idea. He wanted to see if it could run on tequila. And it worked!
There are many myths about tequila, but one thing remains #true since it was first discovered: tequila is a hot commodity. Just like you learned in high school economics, the theory of supply and demand drives price. If what experts are saying is true, tequila will increase in price by over 100%. This rise in price is due to the Blue Agave’s exclusive growing region, plus the fact that it takes each plant around 8 years to mature to tequila-making age. Not only that, the Mexican government holds the patent on the word “tequila”. If anyone outside of Mexico tries to produce tequila, they can be sued for using that name. That’s one way to protect a celebrated National Treasure!
It’s going to be a while until you can mine tequila-diamonds or drive a tequila-powered car. In the meantime, go beyond “shoot, lick, squeeze” and savor tequila in a craft cocktail.
